Newsletter 2009-09-01
Hello everyone and welcome back to what has got to be the wettest September we’ve had in many years. (pardon me while I hammer in a few more nails in my ark!) Never mind, the Old Farmer’s Almanac says it’s going to be a very white winter and that’s what we’re all aiming for.
AGM
Be sure to come out and admire our new lodge! With a new extended deck, floor, paint job, kitchen floor, fridge, and tile wood stove base, we now own a lodge (it’s not a warming hut any more!) We’ll officially christen it at our AGM to be held Oct. 16, 7:30 pm, at the lodge.
Most executive positions are filled so no need to fear being pressured into a job you don’t want. But the executive finds it hard to work in a vacuum. So come out and see what we’re doing and give us advice and comments.
If you haven’t yet purchased your membership for this year, the Oct. 15 deadline will be extended to the 16th for those who attend the meeting! (wow!:)
Ski Club desserts are world famous, bring your best to share!
Membership
Our goal for this year is to build the membership and to this end, we have some plans. The first 50 people/families to get their memberships in, will receive 2 free day passes so that they can invite some friends to come skiing with them!
The rental skis were very popular last year and we’ll continue to rent skis by the season. We will also do evening/day rentals with whatever equipment we have left. We’d like to have 1 or 2 volunteers to take on responsibilities for 1 one evening a week or Sunday afternoons. We have Saturdays and Tuesday evenings covered.
Calendar of Events
Sat. Sept 19 – Too late! You missed our first work party of the year! We filled the wood shed, cleaned and stocked the kitchen and pressure washed the outhouses. (Now if it’d just stop raining we could paint them and they’d look awesome!)
Sat. Sept 26 – We finished splitting the wood!
Friday, Oct. 16 – AGM 7:30 in the Lodge. Bring dessert. Kids welcome.
Sat. Oct. 31 – Halloween Party! 7:30 pm in the lodge. Come in costume; bring a flashlight for the night walk; snacks to share; the Club will bring marshmallows and hot chocolate. A huge bonfire will be lit and fireworks will be fired! Donations of fireworks would be muchly appreciated.
Sat. ???? – Jingle Bell Ski. The first skiable weekend will be a potluck dinner at 5:30 pm. Bring a friend, rentals will be $2 for the evening.
Sunday, Dec. 27 – Open House. 1:30 pm. What else are you going to do the day after boxing day? Bring a friend or 5! We need volunteers to help fit the rentals; guide tours and give lessons. Hosts and hostesses would be great too.
Sat. Jan. 2 – Snow Valley Open and Winter Games Zone time trials. This is why we’re having the Open House early this year. We’ll be needing volunteers to help with this and you should plan on being there for this race if you plan to help out at the Winter Games (our very own Snow Valley Olympics!)
Sat. Jan. 9 - Rabbits begins. 10 am til noon. Snow Flake Café will be open at 11:30. If anyone would like to donate baking this would be gratefully accepted.
Sat. Jan. 16 – Sprint and relay races. 2 pm. It’s not really a race, but we need a couple of dozen people to come out and go through the motions so we can figure out registration, timing and track setting. C’mon, be a sport! Chocolate prizes!
Sat. Feb. 13 – ½ Price Day. Starts at 1:30 pm til 5 pm. All day passes are ½ price and memberships go on sale for ½ price that day too! Bring lots of friends. Bring the folks from work!
Mar. 4 – 7 – BC Winter Games! We’re signing up volunteers now. Please say yes, ‘cuz we’ll have a blast.
As in all other years, there will be Rabbits lessons; adults ski nights (time tba); the teen skiers to which almost teens are welcome; and the marathon.
Oh yeah, the marathon. I (Liz Thorne) organizer of the last 5 or 6 marathons, will be out of town for the marathon this year, Feb. 27. 3 people need to call me (632 6055) and I will tell you exactly what you need to do to keep this race going. But do it before Christmas or I’ll be too busy to talk. It’s easy and it’s fun. Jump in with both skis!
Have a great fall everyone! See you at the AGM.
