Ski Swap November 4/5

Sponsored by Shames Mountain/Canadian Ski Patrol

Two things:

1. If you are a photographer (and who isn't, with these amazing phones?) and can share your best images with us, please do! Always looking for new pictures for newsletters. Also, the Cross Country BC magazine needs to see photos of our northern clubs, so save your best shots and pass them on.

2. The executive is looking for a used filing cabinet for storage of club files. If you have one you can donate, contact Cathy.

Thanks go out to Brenda Jackson for her donation of cedar boards so Doug can continue his facilities projects!

That's it! We'll see you next at the work party, or the AGM, or in a few months taking in the beautiful trails at Onion Lake!

Hi everyone!

Another FAST summer and guess what happens now? We start to get ready for the ski season, even if we are harvesting squash and hiking, and haven't got our hats and mitts out of storage! Just a few tidbits of information and then you can get back to your activities for this evening.

First, September 30th is the last day for the KAL Tire discount, redeemable at the Terrace Kal Tire. When you do purchase your winter tires, thank them for their generous sponsorship of the JackRabbits program and growing this "sport for life"!

We're already getting questions about memberships and the Jack Rabbit program for kids. The membership forms will be available soon, in the next week or so. We are trying to get the kids' program registration ready as well, but have been looking for a few volunteers. We've successfully found a Jack Rabbit program coordinator for the season, but we still need a coaching coordinator. If you are a coach and can help organize the coaches (meetings, emails, plan training events), we need you! Can you give us one ski season of your time? The job description is well documented and you are promised a capable mentor who can help out. Email Lisa through SVNSC.

WORK PARTY!

Saturday, October 15

10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Jobs: Firewood (splitting, stacking), trail pruning (clearing 6' radius around ALL the lightpoles for light maintenance work this fall), general cleanup and burn pile, and lodge cleaning (windows, walls, cupboards, etc.). Also need some cooks (2 pots of soup please) and bread makers, to provide wholesome nourishment for the volunteers. Email Cathy if you can help with the food.

AGM

Friday, October 28 7:30 p.m. in the lodge

Mark you calendars. We promise good cookies, plus lots of engaging discussions about the club and trails, and a chance to meet your winter friends once again!

See you all soon. Start your stretching and strengthening routines in these fall months!

Hey everyone! We’re all well into spring and summer mode now....

At Onion Lake Ski Trails, we've traded in our skis for hammers and chain saws and work gloves! Come on down! At least, read the following:

1. We have such great ski trails, with a variety of landscapes and terrain. That’s a bonus for cross country skiing. Then we also have Dean, our head groomer, lying awake at night planning out the summer activities that need to get done before the snow flies. We ski in a forest, and in a forest, trees grow and trees fall down. This year’s trail work is this: we’ve had so many blow downs over the last few winters, and the groomers will trim the fallen trees enough to get the machines through, but Dean wants to widen up these areas of blow downs, to clear the trail way back so there is no chance of the groomer’s wings catching the branches and logs still sticking out into the trail. (See the photos showing the kind of clearing that Dean wants.) This work involves chain saws and manual labor. The branches need to be moved off the roads and trails, and the larger logs can be piled on the side of the trail and we’ll pick them up later in the summer for firewood for the lodge.

Plan: Trail blitz work party on Saturday, June 11. We’ll start at 10a.m. Teams will be sent out onto the trails system with maps and some tools, but if anyone has chain saws, please bring them. (The club will supply the gas.) Lunch will be provided.

2. More good news: we are replacing older outhouses at the lodge and on the trails, and building a new one on the Doggy Trail. (Do I hear rejoicing?) Our friend Doug, who does a lot of the building maintenance and most of the odd jobs at the ski trails, is taking on this construction project, but he needs a few helpers. These helpers need to be flexible with scheduling (working with Doug’s schedule and weather, etc.) and handy and strong, and take direction from Doug. And we will arrange for cookies for all helpers on work days, we promise! If you can assist with this work, even a couple of times over the summer, please let me know (email snowvalleynordic@gmail.com) and I’ll get you in touch with Doug and Dean.

Thanks, everyone! See you on the trails! (And don’t forget that the trails are a great destination over the summer months for hiking and biking. Use the parking lot closest to the highway.)
